Ferrari backs Vasseur, as it once backed Binotto

Christian Horner told The Times that Ferrari is the only team he would join without an ownership stake, and Ferrari issued a statement of full confidence in Fred Vasseur.3

The Big Story

One crash, three apologies

Franco Colapinto's restart crash took out Lando Norris. By the end of the week it had drawn in a foreign minister, a footballer and, rarest of all, an apology from Flavio Briatore.6

The crash itself was brief. Colapinto locked up into Turn 1 and went into the side of his own teammate, Pierre Gasly, who went into Norris. All three retired, and Colapinto apologised to everyone straight away.7 The stewards gave him a five-place grid drop for the next race and no penalty points.8

Norris had a heavier sentence in mind. "If you cause a crash on a restart like this, you should have at least a one-race ban," he said, and questioned whether that kind of driving belonged in Formula 1 at all. The Race's Scott Mitchell-Malm called him a lone voice, and the podium agreed. Russell said bans were for something dangerous and intentional, and Verstappen said these things happen as long as the driver apologises.9

Then Argentina replied. Pablo Quirno, its foreign minister, pointed out that Norris had once driven into the back of Oscar Piastri in Montreal without calling for a penalty on himself, and Sergio Agüero joined in. Alpine issued a statement condemning the online abuse aimed at its driver.10

Briatore said sorry to Norris and McLaren, called it a very poor move for a driver of Colapinto's experience, and said he would take time to consider what to do. Thomas Maher reported that standing Colapinto down for Malaysia was not off the table, though The Race's Edd Straw thought Briatore mostly wanted to make him sweat.11

By Monday the temperature had dropped. Norris posted that he had messaged Colapinto to apologise for comments he "simply shouldn't have said", adding: "It was wrong of me." He says they are still friends, though Colapinto has not spoken publicly about it. Maher reports that cooler heads prevailed, and Colapinto will race in Malaysia, five places further back.12

Who's Beefin'

Lando Norris vs Franco Colapinto

Heat: 4/5

The Race reports that after Colapinto caused a crash at the Baku restart, Norris called for a ban. Tommo reads out Norris's verdict: "shouldn't be in the sport, deserves a race ban". Peter Windsor ranked it one of the worst pieces of driving of the year, then upgraded it to probably the worst within the same sentence, and repeated the ruling in a second video. Tommo argued that Alpine probably shouldn't punish Colapinto.13

Arvid Lindblad vs Liam Lawson

Heat: 4/5

The Red Flags Podcast says Lindblad crashed into his Racing Bulls teammate Lawson and refused team orders, and its driver ranking gave him an F. On The Race, Scott Mitchell-Malm could not believe the stewards had let it go without a penalty, having penalised Colapinto.14

Peter Windsor vs Lando Norris

Heat: 3/5

On Thursday, Windsor watched Norris misjudge an entry and brush a wall, with no real damage: "But I just thought, hmm, yeah, that is Lando." By the full race analysis, the same habit had become unacceptable. On Cameron Cc's channel, Windsor added that Norris must take some blame for the Colapinto crash, for being where he could be hit.15

Lewis Hamilton vs Ferrari

Heat: 3/5

Ferrari appeared in three of TacticalRab's four titles this week. In one, TacticalRab paraphrased Hamilton's words: "You're so useless that I'm just going to look at the TV." TacticalRab also says Ferrari's new engine is still being shown up by Red Bull on the straights.16

Everyone vs Oscar Piastri

Heat: 2/5

Peter Windsor called the lockup into turn one ridiculous. Cameron Cc says Piastri looks to have regressed. The Inside Line relays Jolyon Palmer asking which Oscar is the real one.17

Josh Revell vs Content Creators

Heat: 1/5

Josh Revell, who makes YouTube videos, listed the things to dislike about motorsport: "the organization, the fans, the content creators especially".18

The Hard Compound

Windsor's allocation this week: hards on the 2026 regulations and Red Bull's tyre choice, mediums on football and race control, softs on social media and the absence of a French Grand Prix.

The regulations. Cameron Cc titled one video "Peter Windsor: Verstappen Vs Russell Battle Was Proper Motor Racing!" Inside, Windsor said the battle came down to energy use, "which to me is just sapping away from the really athletic, gladiatorial side of any sort of battle." The title called it proper motor racing. Windsor didn't.19

The soft tyre. Windsor asked "why they wouldn't have had Max on the soft tyre from the start" in his race analysis, and again in his full-weekend analysis. Two Cameron Cc videos later, he still didn't know. Four videos, one question. Guest shouter TacticalRab: "The C5 could have probably done the whole race."20

Football. Windsor called sacking a manager football-style "a very childish, silly thing to do at a Formula One level", word for word, in two Cameron Cc videos. In a third, he predicted Christian Horner "probably will go to Ferrari because of the whole groundswell of 'sack the manager' mentality". Windsor is against it, and expects it to win.21

Race control. Windsor on the response to Colapinto's crash: "the very, very slow reflexes. That's the only way to describe it." It was his second attempt at a description. Guest shouter Jolyon Palmer, on F1's own channel: "I don't know why it wasn't neutralized." When F1 TV is asking, the question is a fair one.22

The 10%. Windsor ruled that "90% of F1 fans won't care to do the deep dive and understand", then gave the other 10% the deep dive across 11 videos. Haas's interest in Rafael Câmara was "social media type thinking". Ocon's prospects were filed under the calendar: "because we don't have a French Grand Prix, it's very difficult for a driver."23
